My dough seems a bit dry. What did I do wrong?
Our doughs and mixes have been specially formulated to need only the addition of water. Often, as you begin to mix the dough you will notice that it forms large crumbs. Some of our recipes also ask you to moisten your hands and gather the dough together once it has become large crumbs. This is because the natural warmth of your hands will soften our dough and help to combine all the ingredients thoroughly. We realize this seems new to most of our customers but the little added work will pay off and you will find you have a very workable dough to create with.

Can't I just add another teaspoon or water and mix it with a fork?
No. If you add too much water and then go and shape the dough, you will find that it becomes sticky and loose, making creating impossible. If you find the dough to be a bit stiffer than you would like, lightly moisten your hands with water and gather the crumbs together that way.

Do your color gels wash off of skin easily?
Yes. Simply washing with warm water is usually efficient, but adding a bit of dish soap to your hands works well too.

Do your color gels wash off of clothing easily?
They do. As with any other coloring agent, the earlier you can treat the spot the better. Wash the garment as you usually would. Dish soap is a fine alternative to laundry detergent if you are unable to launder the garment immediately. Wearing a smock or apron is recommended so that there is less risk of spotting and you can concentrate on having fun creating.

Perhaps you let them cool too long on the baking sheet. Simply place the baking sheet in the oven for a minute to heat and gently soften the cookies and carefully remove them with a spatula.

The edges of my cookie are browning but the center still needs more baking time.
Each oven's temperature varies and sometimes a larger cookie will need longer to bake than a standard size one, especially if it is thicker to begin with! Placing some aluminum foil strips along the edges of the cookie will protect them from browning further while the rest of the cookie has an opportunity to bake to proper doneness.

These will be easy to "glue" together when you spread icing over them. For now as they cool, place them as close together as you can. Remove them from the cooling rack carefully and ice them on the same plate you wish to serve them on.

If I don't have the right cookie cutter, can I use a paper pattern to cut out shapes?
Sure! Patterns make it easy to create unique shapes. If you want to use the pattern more than once, make it out of clean poster board or craft foam. Draw the pattern on the board or paper and cut it out. Spray one side lightly with nonstick cooking spray. Place the pattern, sprayed side down, on the rolled-out dough or mixture and cut around it with a small, sharp knife. Gently peel off the pattern. You may need to re-spray every 2 or 3 cutouts.

What's the best way to tint the dough?
You can work color directly into the batter. Simply add a few drops of our color gels to the batter or dough and mix thoroughly to combine. Kids enjoy mixing with their hands, but if you want to keep things less messy, simply place the dough into a plastic sandwich baggie and ask them to squish away!

How do I tint coconut?
Dilute a few drops of food color with 1 teaspoon water in a large resealable plastic food storage bag. Add about 1 cup of flaked coconut. Close the bag and shake well until the coconut is evenly coated with color.

I didn't get to finish working with the dough. Can I freeze it for later?
We do not recommend freezing the dough or batters of any of our kits.

How long will my Crafty Cooking Kit creations last?
We recommend that you eat your designs within 24 hours, as we don't add preservatives to the mixes.
